CFB DeptHITS: Tuesday, October 29
We are working through updates to prep for week ten and these are the ones you'll want to know. Also, we have posted our "Game Cards" for the weekday games this week.
We make hundreds of tweaks and adjustments to our 134 live depth charts over at CFBDepth.com — this feature is designed to provide you with the “big” updates that you’ll want to know heading into the week of college football action. Today, there are plenty of injury and status updates and we’ll provide links to our “Game Cards” for the nine weekday games in week ten, starting tonight.
Vanderbilt ::: QB Diego Pavia is banged up but will play week ten against Auburn. This is obviously good news for the Commodores and Pavia is not the type to sit out any games under many circumstances beyond his control.
Virginia Tech ::: RB Bhayshul Tuten is looking more 'probable' for week ten after comments from his teammate WR Jaylin Lane saying he'll be back out there for us" in a recent interview. Good enough for us. He has consistently found his way back on the field despite consistent injuries throughout this season.
UAB ::: QB Jacob Zeno will remain out week ten. He has not been ruled out for the season but this seems like a complicated shoulder issue and it would not be surprising if he does not return in 2024.
Arizona State ::: QB Sam Leavitt took a shot to the ribs in week seven. He has not played since and is expected to make his return week 10 at Oklahoma State.
Michigan ::: QB Jack Tuttle will have to retire from the game of football after experiencing his fifth concussion.
Nevada ::: Good news on QB Brendon Lewis, who appears ready to roll in week ten after missing week nine, is a rash of injuries suffered on the Big Island. This includes RBs Savion Red and Patrick Garwo, but also has eight more players that were "banged up" and could possibly miss some time. Individual updates on each were not provided. The injury & status page has been updated with these names.
Clemson ::: Both WR Tyler Brown and Bryant Wesco Jr. are listed on the Clemson depth chart for week ten. They have each been battling injuries and appear ready to return to action against Louisville coming off of the bye week.
UTEP ::: QB Skyler Locklear took over for an injured Cade McConnell for the Miners. He is now expected to be a game-time call in week 10 against Middle Tennessee. We could see JP Pickles if Locklear is unable to suit up.
Iowa ::: WR Reece Vander Zee was left off the first depth chart, indicating that he is unlikely to be able to go following an injury in week nine.
New Mexico ::: WR Luke Wysong was hurt in week nine at Colorado State. No update was given early in the day and it appears he will be a 'game-time decision' for week ten. Less impactful, but still notable 'questionable' tags will be on RBs Javen Jacobs and Naquari Rogers, along with WR Caleb Medford.
Wyoming ::: QB Kaden Anderson will draw the start for the Cowboys in week ten against New Mexico. This, after he took over for a struggling Evan Svoboda in week nine's narrow loss to Utah State. RB Harrison Waylee will return to the mix in week ten, but they will be without WR Tyler King.
Illinois ::: WR Pat Bryant looks like he is now 'probable' for week ten after taking a shot to the head in week nine against Oregon.
Fresno State ::: RB Malik Sherrod has been out for a while, but we finally got an update that it is 'long-term' and they will not rush him back. Sounds like it will be a while (if at all) until we see him again.
New Mexico State ::: QB Brandon Nunez is expected to get the start on Tuesday of week ten. He'll start over Parker Awad and Santino Marucci, who may still have lingering effects from an injury.
Purdue ::: QBs Hudson Card and Ryan Browne will split reps in the upcoming week ten game against Northwestern.
Syracuse ::: TE Oronde Gadsden took a big hit in week nine but is expected to be ready to go week ten against Virginia Tech. This is big news for the Orange offense. Meanwhile, RB Yasin Willis is "day-to-day" and questionable for week 10.
Kentucky ::: QB Brock Vandagriff is no longer the sure-fire starter for the Wildcats. OC Bush Hamdan was non-commital when asked who would start next week as they may go to backup Gavin Wimsatt to try to spark this offense.
Texas Tech ::: In an update on QB Behren Morton's shoulder injury, it is his non-throwing shoulder and is not expected to be season-ending. He is probable to play week ten.
Georgia Southern ::: QB JC French remains the Eagles' starter behind center for now. Head coach Clay Helton did say that they would go to Dexter Williams if needed. French did not have a great performance in week nine, a blowout loss to Old Dominion.
West Virginia ::: QB Garrett Greene is still 'struggling to return' for the Mountaineers and will remain very questionable as he does have the bye week ten to get ready for the week 11 contest at Cincinnati. RB CJ Donaldson and CB Kekoura Tarnue were both mentioned has having injuries and it being too early to tell for them going into the bye week.
Arkansas ::: Hogs updates: QB Ja'Quinden Jackson is unlikely to return to action week 10. Rodney Hill is expected to be upgraded to probable and expected to contribute with Jackson out. Also, CB Jaylon Braxton will miss week ten as he conntinues to recover.
Middle Tennessee ::: TE Holden Willis was hurt in week nine and will be officially listed as questionable for week ten at UTEP. He is a big part of the passing offense.
Texas ::: WR Isaiah Bond was held out of the week 10 game against Vanderbilt to ensure he would be fully ready to roll after the bye in week 10 when the Longhorns take on Florida Gators in week 11.
Pittsburgh ::: QB Eli Holstein is in a "wait and see" situation for Pitt heading into week ten. It was originally reported that this was all a 'precaution' late in the week nine game on Friday evening. It turns out it's a bit more than that. We'll track it closely as the undefeated Panthers prepare for a big showdown with SMU.
Penn State ::: Update on QB Drew Allar is that we may have to wait until game-time for a decision to be made on his status for week ten against
Kentucky ::: RB Demie Sumo-Karngbaye is listed as the top running back on the Wildcats' first released depth chart ahead of week ten. That may indicate he is back after missing week nine with an injury.
Indiana ::: QB Kurtis Rourke is throwing at practice and there is optimism on the chances of his return week ten against Michigan State.
Florida International ::: QB Keyone Jenkins is healthy and practicing. It was mentioned that all Panthers quarterbacks are healthy and doing the same to prepare. All fully expect Jenkins to keep his starting role in Tuesday's home game against New Mexico State.
Rice ::: Head Coach Mike Bloomgren has been fired. He is replaced with an interim title on current Associate Head Coach Pete Alamar.
UCF ::: Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof has been fired. Co-DC/DB coach Addison Williams will take over the play-calling duties on defense. HC Gus Mahzahn has also handed off play-calling responsibilities on offense to Tim Harris Jr. the current offensive coordinator.
Utah State ::: TE/WR Broc Lane's injury woes continue as he is announced 'out for the season' after another setback in week nine. He will be sidelined and joins Jalen Royals as hitting the shelf, leaving the Aggies very thin on playmakers for the rest of 2024.
