CFB DeptHITS: Tuesday, September 3
Monday is "injury update" day from the week that was. We have a good number of impactful updates on that front in this edition of the HITS. You'll also see some notes/observations.
We are in the process of making week one updates to all 134 of our depth charts. This is a detailed process and not automated. This allows us to prep the charts for the next week with the best possible information. By Thursday morning of each week, we’ll have all charts ready to roll. We also will go in order of the next week’s game schedule. So, if there are early week games, they will be ready first.
On to the news of the day…mostly impact injury updates:
Texas A&M ::: Starting C Mark Nabou was hurt during the week one contest against Notre Dame. Mike Elko announced today that he is out for the 2024 season.
Utah State ::: RB Robert Briggs Jr. was hurt in week one and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season; Rahsul Faison will carry a big load going forward with Herschel Turner backing him up.
Syracuse ::: LB Marlowe Wax will miss half of the season with an unspecified injury. That hurts the Orange defensive unit. He is a key contributor.
Texas Tech ::: The Red Raiders put out an injury report for week two. There are some big names on there. In addition to LB Joseph Adedire being announced out for the season; star RB Tahj Brooks is listed as "questionable" amongst others.
Michigan State ::: Major injuries hitting the Spartans early. WR Alante Brown will be out until November. The secondary took a big hit with a season-ending injury to Dillon Tatum and one to Khaleel Majeed, leaving him "doubtful" for this coming week.
Indiana ::: RB Kaelon Black was removed from the game after one carry (for seven yards) with hamstring tightness. He was still the third back to get a carry and might miss some time.
North Carolina State ::: Injury updates include S Devan Boykin out until September. DB Ja'Had Carter will be back for this upcoming week two.
Georgia ::: WR Dillon Bell had cramping that limited him in week one; should be good to go next week. LB Mykel Williams has a Grade 2 ankle sprain and may miss a couple of games. He most likely rests this week against Tennessee Tech to get back week three against Kentucky.
Florida ::: QB Graham Mertz is not practicing on Monday. His status remains questionable with a concussion. DJ Lagway is getting first team reps and would start for the Gators if needed.
Jacksonville State ::: WR Brannon Spector suffered a severe knee injury and will miss the remainder of 2024.
Notre Dame ::: WR Jordan Faison did not play in the opener and will miss more 1-2 weeks.
Utah ::: Starting CB Kenan Johnson suffered a season-ending injury. DL Aliki Vimahi was also injured in week one but his is not considered season-ending. A couple of losses for the Utes.
RANDOM OBSERVATIONS & INJURY TRACKING ||||||
Syracuse: DL Braylen Ingraham did not play week one for Syracuse. He is an impact player and we are tracking for a possible injury.
Maryland: Former DL Isaac Bunyun moved from the defense to the offensive line and logged starters snaps at left guard for the Terps.
Connecticut: DL Pryce Yates is an impact defensive player. He did not play against Maryland. Not a lot of news surrounding this. Also, QB Nick Evers was forced to leave the week one game and is questionable to play week two. Lastly, LB Julien Simon did not play and we’re tracking for a potential injury as well. These are some important pieces for the Huskies.
Iowa State: LB Caleb Bacon was injured on special teams in week one against North Dakota. He was in a brace and on crutches post-game. It does not look good. We’ll await official word; but if he is out for an extended period, it will negatively affect this defense. Iowa is next.
California: Both outside wide receivers - Tobias Merriweather and Kyion Grayes - did not play in week one. Both had walking boots on. A lack of an update gives hope that they were held out as a precaution in week one and will be back ready to roll on the Plains at Auburn in week two. We’re tracking it.
North Carolina: RB Caleb Hood did not travel with the Tar Heels in week one but looks to be available for week two as he appears on the newly released depth chart.
