Portal Pulse: January 20
This is the January 20th version of the "Portal Pulse" catching up on the last few days of portal activity and what it means.
In this edition of the Pulse, we’ll get caught up on the portal action happening, January 16-19th, 2026, with plenty of impactful transfer portal movement.
[ Note: The number in parentheses is the player rating — out of 20. If you’d like to learn more about how this number is derived, check out this article > ]
SUMMARY
Here is a look at the portal movement as we have reached the close of the general window and begin the ten-day extended window for Indiana and Miami players. We have already seen a big name enter from Indiana, as expected, Alberto Mendoza [13.3] entered the portal following the National Championship win, led by his brother, now a legend, Fernando Mendoza. The Hoosiers already picked up Josh Hoover [15.5] from the portal, and he is very likely going to take on the role as the quarterback to follow in the footsteps of Mendoza.

Here is a look at the total breakdown from our Portal Tracker: Summary page:
We have settled in right around 4,200 players with a few trickling in that flew under the radar. We do still have the ten-day window open for Hoosiers and Hurricanes who would like to seek opportunities elsewhere. As you can see, we are at 63% of the players signed with new programs. There is growing sentiment that things are going to slow down on the portal, as so many have signed and roster spots (within the 95 limit) are becoming harder to obtain. Those on the fringes are looking to withdraw, and some are even being turned away from coming back to their programs. It’s a lesson in the market correcting itself, and now players are scrambling to find homes. Many will have to level down, perform, and come back up.
WHAT AM I LOOKING AT HERE?
We are tracking full roster talent churn. It’s important to note that this rating and ranking is 1.) portal-only and 2.) total roster talent churn. This means that we are counting every player who is coming and going to come up with this ranking. Later, we will dive into actual impacts by projecting rotational playing time. We had some questions about this and thought it important to describe in more detail.
TOP TEN :::::: view all >
UCLA retains the top spot and has a relatively comfortable lead with less impactful players remaining to be signed. They have have this locked up. Impressive work from new Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield, moving his Razorbacks up into the No. 2 spot in talent churn — they are particularly upgraded on the defensive side of the ball (which was very needed). Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State remain in the top three. Again, we see Virginia moving into the top ten. They finished 8th in ‘portal churn’ a year ago, 1st amongst ACC competition — and we saw what kind of year they had in 2025. The original ‘Portal King’ Deion Sanders is making some moves, now working the Colorado Buffaloes into the top ten with 42 additions, outweighing in numbers (37 leaving) and talent level, the losses.

Top Ten Trending UP:
The UAB Blazers are making big moves, having secured 20 (!) players since our last update a few days ago. The most impactful includes CB Jeremiah Jordan [13.9] from Memphis and RB Ja’Vin Simpkins [12.9] from Coastal Carolina. Alex Mortensen is doing all his can to build up the roster and improve this program in his first season as full-time head coach.

Notes: YER = Years of Eligibility remaining.
A ‘+’ indicates a potential additional year for a medical hardship waiver for the 2025 season.
QB Darian Mensah [16.9], leaving Duke
Mensah is coming off a sensational 2025 campaign where he threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, leading the Blue Devils to an ACC Championship. Standing 6-foot-3, the sophomore from San Luis Obispo, California, previously spent time at Tulane before arriving in Durham. He is currently considered one of the top available signal-callers in the portal after choosing to move on despite his success. Mensah is reportedly a strong candidate for the Miami Hurricanes, with local reports indicating he is expected to sign there barring something unforeseen.DL Aidan Keanaaina [15.2], leaving California
A physical force at 320 pounds, Keanaaina was an honorable mention All-ACC selection in 2025 after leading all Cal defensive linemen with 55 total tackles. The Brighton, Colorado native is a former Notre Dame transfer who brought significant experience to the Golden Bears’ interior front over the last two years. In the 2025 season, he recorded 1.5 sacks and reached a career-high 10 tackles in a single game against Virginia. Known for his leadership and maturity, he was the first Cal defensive lineman to record back-to-back 40+ tackle seasons since 2019.WR Cayden Lee [14.7], leaving Ole Miss
Lee served as a reliable target for the Rebels in 2025, recording 44 receptions for 635 yards and three touchdowns. Hailing from the Atlanta area, the 5-foot-11 receiver initially joined Ole Miss as a four-star prospect and quickly carved out a role in a high-powered SEC offense. His 2025 highlights included a career-long 62-yard catch against Arkansas and five receptions in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Miami. Lee’s departure follows a productive tenure where he totaled over 1,600 receiving yards in three years.DL Devarrick Woods [14.3], leaving Texas State
Woods is a 6-foot-3, 290-pound interior defender who spent the 2025 season as a rotational but productive piece for the Bobcats. A native of Bossier City, Louisiana, he joined the program after a successful junior college stint at Hinds Community College. In 2025, he was credited with 16 tackles and one sack while providing a consistent motor against the run. Woods has recently been identified as a target for NC State, where he took an official visit in mid-January 2026.WR Tray Taylor [13.7], leaving Troy
Taylor enjoyed a breakout 2025 season with the Trojans, leading the team with 16.6 yards per catch on 30 receptions for 499 yards. Before arriving at Troy, he was a standout at Coastal Carolina and a high-level junior college producer at Tyler Junior College. The explosive wideout found the end zone three times this past season and was particularly effective in conference play, where he averaged 18 yards per grab. His blend of speed and catch radius makes him a coveted deep threat for programs looking to stretch the field.QB Parker Navarro [13.5], leaving Ohio
Navarro capped off his tenure at Ohio by leading the Bobcats to a 9-4 record in 2025 while throwing for 2,375 yards and 14 touchdowns. A true dual-threat weapon from Tempe, Arizona, he also added 886 rushing yards and nine scores on the ground this past season. Navarro previously played at UCF before becoming a mainstay in the MAC, where he earned second-team all-conference honors. He enters the portal seeking a seventh year of eligibility and is expected to be a popular name for Power 4 programs needing a veteran starter — if he is granted the waiver.DB Jaavan Mack [13.1], leaving Western Kentucky
Mack is a veteran defensive back who moved to Western Kentucky for the 2025 season after four years at Charlotte. He recorded 26 tackles and one interception during his time with the Hilltoppers, showcasing the versatility to play multiple positions in the secondary. Standing 6-foot-1, the Georgia native followed his twin brother, Jairus, to WKU but has now opted to explore other opportunities. Mack comes from a strong football lineage; his cousin is former NFL standout Dunta Robinson.DB Da’Marcus Crosby II [13.0], leaving Virginia
Crosby brought significant experience to the Cavaliers in 2025 after a decorated stint at New Mexico State. A native of Houston, Texas, the 6-foot-2 safety is known for his range and ball-hawking abilities, having led his previous team in interceptions in 2023. During his 2025 campaign at Virginia, he saw action in 13 games and contributed to a secondary that faced several top-tier ACC offenses. He initially began his collegiate journey in the junior college ranks at Kilgore College, where he was a conference champion.DB Jamier Johnson [12.8], leaving UCLA
A Pasadena native, Johnson returned to his home state to play for UCLA in 2025 after stops at Texas and Indiana. The 6-foot senior cornerback has long been prized for his length and athleticism, traits that made him a four-star recruit out of high school. In 2025, he provided a veteran presence in the Bruins’ secondary, contributing 35 tackles and serving as a reliable man-coverage defender. He enters the portal for a third time, looking to find a final destination to showcase his NFL-caliber physical tools.OL Matt Henry [12.6], leaving Troy
Henry is a massive interior lineman standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 360 pounds, originally from Auckland, New Zealand. In the 2025 season, he anchored the Trojans’ offensive front at right guard, following a 2024 campaign where he did not allow a single sack. A former rugby player who transitioned to football at New Mexico Military Institute, Henry brings rare power and size to the portal. While he initially declared for the NFL Draft in late December 2025, he has also officially appeared in the transfer portal as of mid-January 2026.

TOP PLAYER SIGNINGS
Here is a look at the top ten portal entries (by player rating) we saw enter over the last 24 hours:
K Jack Olsen [16.9] Signed with: Miami (FL) << from Northwestern
Olsen wrapped up his four-year Northwestern career as one of the most accurate kickers in program history. In the 2025 season, he finished seventh nationally with a 90.5 field goal percentage, going 19-of-21 on attempts and a perfect 14-of-14 on kicks from 30-49 yards. The Wheaton, Illinois native has one year of eligibility left and will immediately enter a direct position battle at Miami with fellow transfer Jake Weinberg, who was also signed yesterday. The two will compete to replace four-year starter Andres Borregales, with Olsen likely handling field goals and Weinberg a potential option for kickoffs.TE Tony Livingston [16.2] Signed with: Baylor << from Florida
A physically imposing target at 6-foot-5 and 264 pounds, Livingston developed into a reliable pass-catcher during his time in Gainesville, having previously played both tight end, wide receiver, and edge in high school. The Tampa, Florida native recorded 11 receptions for 119 yards and two touchdowns in the 2025 season. Livingston is a junior and expected to add depth and playmaking ability to a Baylor tight end room that often utilizes multiple tight end sets. His large frame and basketball background make him a tough matchup in the red zone and a strong breakout candidate in the Bears’ offense.DL Jamond Mathis [15.4] Signed with: Texas Tech << from Kent State
Mathis, a Saint Charles, Missouri native, has steadily climbed the college football ranks from FCS Southern Illinois to the MAC and now to the Big 12. As a second-team All-MAC selection in 2025, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound edge rusher was a force, tallying 28 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss, and a team-high 6.0 sacks for the Golden Flashes. Known for his explosive burst and relentless motor, Mathis brings two years of eligibility to Lubbock. He flipped his portal commitment from Virginia to the Red Raiders.DL J’Dan Burnett [15.0] Signed with: Rutgers << from Tulsa
A well-traveled defensive lineman from Fort Worth, Texas, Burnett spent one productive season at Tulsa in 2025 after four years at Louisiana Tech. Standing 6-foot, 250 pounds, he was an American Athletic Conference Second Team honoree this past season, leading the team with 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss in 12 games. Burnett has one year of eligibility remaining and is a significant addition to the Rutgers defense, which has undergone a complete overhaul this offseason. He will compete with fellow transfer edge rusher Rondo Porter for a starting spot on the revamped Scarlet Knights’ defensive line.K Jake Weinberg [14.9] Signed with: Miami (FL) << from Florida State
Weinberg is a highly-touted former high school All-American who served as the primary kickoff specialist during his time at Florida State. While he did not handle field goal duties, he is renowned for his powerful leg and accuracy on kickoffs, an area where his new teammate Jack Olsen did not participate at Northwestern. The addition of both kickers creates a fascinating internal dynamic in Coral Gables, with a likely split of duties for the 2026 season. Weinberg will have an opportunity to compete for the starting field goal job with Olsen and help maintain Miami’s strong kicking tradition.RB Gavin Sawchuk [14.7] Signed with: Northwestern << from Florida State
Sawchuk, a speedy back from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, joins Northwestern after a successful tenure at Florida State. In the 2025 season, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound junior rushed for 717 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per carry while sharing the backfield load. His most notable physical trait is his acceleration, a skill that consistently produced explosive plays for the Seminoles. He will likely step into a key role for the Wildcats in 2026, competing for touches with returning players and other potential transfer additions in a revamped offensive backfield.RB Makhi Frazier [14.7] Signed with: Ole Miss << from Michigan State
A powerful runner out of the Dallas, Texas area, Frazier provides the Rebels with an immediate infusion of talent and physicality at the running back position. The 6-foot, 225-pound sophomore was a bright spot for the Spartans in 2025, rushing for 550 yards and four touchdowns as a primary ball carrier. He joins a crowded but talented Ole Miss backfield that features returning starter Kewan Lacy and other established running backs. Frazier’s hard-nosed running style and ability to break tackles will likely see him carve out a role.DB Carter Stoutmire [14.5] Signed with: Arkansas << from Colorado
Stoutmire comes to Arkansas with impressive defensive versatility, capable of playing both cornerback and safety. In his 2025 season at Colorado, the 6-foot, 185-pound defensive back was a reliable presence in the secondary, recording 45 total tackles and five pass breakups. Hailing from the Dallas area, he brings a high football IQ and the ability to diagnose plays quickly to Fayetteville. Stoutmire will enter a defensive backfield looking for impact players, where he will compete with returning veterans and other defensive transfers to earn a starting position and bolster the Razorbacks’ struggling pass defense.RB Gemari Sands [14.4] Signed with: Florida State << from Florida Atlantic
Sands is a dynamic, home-state running back from Fort Lauderdale who returns to a Power 4 conference after a productive career at Florida Atlantic. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior posted impressive numbers in 2025, rushing for over 900 yards and scoring nine total touchdowns for the Owls. Known for his agility and vision, Sands is expected to help fill the void left by Gavin Sawchuk’s departure to Northwestern. He will compete with a talented group of running backs in Tallahassee for the starting job and a significant share of carries in the Seminoles’ offense.LB Isaiah Thomison [14.4] Signed with: Illinois << from Bowling Green
Thomison is a productive linebacker who transfers to Illinois after a solid 2025 season at Bowling Green. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound native of Canton, Ohio, was a key cog in the Falcons’ defense, accumulating 78 tackles and two sacks while demonstrating strong instincts against both the run and pass. He joins an Illinois linebacker corps that values physical play and consistency. Thomison’s experience and production suggest he will immediately be a strong contender for a starting inside linebacker position in 2026.
