Portal Pulse: January 28
This is the January 28th version of the "Portal Pulse" catching up on the last week of portal activity and what it all means for the 2026 season.
In this edition of the Pulse, we’ll get caught up on the portal action happening, January 20-27, 2026, with plenty of impactful transfer portal movement.
[ Note: The number in parentheses is the player rating — out of 20. If you’d like to learn more about how this number is derived, check out this article > ]
SUMMARY
Since we last checked in, portal movement has slowed, marking a point that is getting slightly uncomfortable — primarily for players. We saw the initial surge early in the 2025-26 transfer portal. Teams were better prepared to act quickly, secure offers to top players, and secure their commitments for the 2026 season. Now that many programs are nearing their 95-man roster limit, many players (over 1,200) have entered the transfer portal and have yet to find their next home. We had 283 players find those landing spots since our last check-in, moving us to 71% of the tracked players with potential to play at the FBS level.
Here is a look at the total breakdown from our Portal Tracker: Summary page:
The big news is that Duke and former QB Darian Mensah have reached a settlement in the dispute that led to legal implications. That settlement paved the way making official his signing at the University of Miami. Mario Cristobal and company added his favorite target, WR Cooper Barkate, and a top former SEC defensive lineman in Damon Wilson II coming over from Mizzou (via Georgia).
WHAT AM I LOOKING AT HERE?
We are tracking full roster talent churn. It’s important to note that this rating and ranking is 1.) portal-only and 2.) total roster talent churn. This means that we are counting every player who is coming and going to come up with this ranking. Later, we will dive into actual impacts by projecting rotational playing time. We had some questions about this and thought it important to describe in more detail.
TOP TEN :::::: view all >
The UCLA Bruins and Arkansas Razorbacks, each with new coaches, remain atop our portal talent churn rankings even after a week has passed. Some teams have closed on them, as we see the Arizona Wildcats making a little move all the way to third on the overall talent churn ratings/rankings. Alex Mortensen keeps doing work in the portal as his UAB Blazers are the lone group of six program to make the top ten, coming in at fourth. Wake Forest drops one spot as Will Stein’s Kentucky Wildcats have skyrocketed into sixth place. Kenny Dillingham’s Arizona State Sun Devils fell a bit but remain in the top ten as they look to replace a lot of talent heading to the NFL. As some Indiana Hoosiers begin to announce plans to move on, they are falling slightly, but are holding in the top ten as of today.

TRENDS
Top Ten Trending UP:
Kennesaw State has made a big leap with 12 new commitment announcements over the last week. Similarly, UMass moves up from 107th in the rankings to 46th. That was fueled by a run on seven new players ready to call Amherst home for 2026.
Top Ten Trending DOWN:
You’ll notice some big name programs on this list. Baylor, SMU, Cincinnati, Clemson and Georgia jump out at us. However, those five should be less concerned with the drop in portal churn, as they have the recruiting chops and talent in-house to help with the losses. The Jacksonville State, Marshall, James Madison, Gerogia Southern and WKU contingent should be on higher alert.
TOP PLAYER SIGNINGS
Here is a look at the top ten portal entries (by player rating) we saw enter over the last 24 hours:
QB Darian Mensah [16.7] Signed with: Miami (FL) << from Duke
The star signal-caller from Duke delivered an elite campaign in 2025, finishing second nationally in both passing yards (3,973) and touchdowns (34), while throwing just six interceptions and earning All-ACC recognition. A redshirt junior with a solid 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame, Mensah has the athleticism to run if needed but excels as a passer in a pro-style offense. He steps into a starting role for the Hurricanes, with the primary goal of leveraging his connection with former Duke teammate, WR Cooper Barkate, and other talented receivers to make another national title push. Mensah and Duke settled their legal battle earlier in the week and both are moving on.DL Damon Wilson II [15.1] Signed with: Miami (FL) << from Missouri
The former five-star recruit had a breakout junior campaign at Missouri, terrorizing SEC quarterbacks to the tune of 9.0 sacks and 23 total tackles. Standing 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Wilson utilized elite explosiveness to rack up 54 quarterback pressures, ranking him top-10 nationally. At Miami, he is expected to immediately fill the void left by departing stars Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, likely headlining a 2026 defensive line rotation alongside Marquise Lightfoot and others.DL James Jennette [14.9] Signed with: Utah State << from Virginia Tech
Jennette brings a veteran 6-foot-4, 228-pound frame to Logan after serving primarily as a high-motor depth piece and special teams contributor for the Hokies. In limited action during the 2025 season, he recorded nine tackles and 0.5 sacks while making one start. As a former top-ranked junior college edge rusher, he enters the Utah State program with an opportunity to seize a starting role in a defensive front that is being heavily rebuilt for 2026.WR Cayden Lee [14.7] Signed with: Missouri << from Ole Miss
A shifty 5-foot-11 target, Lee was a part of the Rebels’ high-octane offense in 2025, recording 44 receptions for 635 yards and three touchdowns. He demonstrated reliable hands with zero drops and excelled in the 2025 College Football Playoff, catching five passes against Miami in the semifinals. He heads to Missouri to reunite with former Ole Miss QB Austin Simmons and is projected to start in the slot for the Tigers in 2026.DL Princewill Umanmielen [14.7] Signed with: LSU << from Ole Miss
Umanmielen exploded onto the national scene in 2025, leading Ole Miss with 9.0 sacks and earning All-SEC honors while helping the Rebels reach the CFP semifinals. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound edge rusher posted 13.0 tackles for loss. Following coach Lane Kiffin to Baton Rouge, he is the projected cornerstone of the 2026 LSU defense and will battle for dominance on the edge alongside other high-profile transfers.WR Cooper Barkate [14.7] Signed with: Miami (FL) << from Duke
Barkate was a focal point of Duke’s offense in 2025, hauling in 76 receptions for 1,103 yards and 7 touchdowns. At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, he proved to be a deep-threat specialist, averaging over 17 yards per catch on long-range targets. Now at Miami, he reunites with his quarterback Darian Mensah and will enter a competitive position battle for starting snaps against returning Hurricanes like Malachi Toney and Vandrevius Jacobs.DB DJ Kelly [14.6] Signed with: James Madison << from Toledo
As a true freshman in 2025, Kelly earned significant playing time for a Toledo defense that ranked among the best in the MAC. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound cornerback recorded 10 tackles, an interception, and a sack in just 138 defensive snaps. With JMU losing several key defensive backs this offseason, Kelly is positioned to compete for a starting spot on the perimeter immediately in 2026.LB Malik Bryant [14.3] Signed with: Missouri << from Miami (FL)
A versatile 6-foot-2, 225-pound defender, Bryant played in 12 games in 2024 but saw more limited action in four games during Miami’s 2025 national title run. Known for his speed and acceleration, he recorded 5.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks this season. He moves to Missouri to play for his former position coach Derek Nicholson and is expected to compete for a starting role at boundary edge or outside linebacker in 2026.
