CFB DeptHITS: Sunday, August 25
A slower news day as everybody tuned in to watch what was a fun week zero in college football. Here is some news and notes and a few quick depth chart reactions for those who played.
Virginia ::: Anthony Colandrea wins the starting quarterback job for the Cavaliers, beating out Tony Muskett.
Further: This was a good camp battle and Muskett is right there, but the more exciting Colandrea ultimately wins out. Both are highly rated by our player ratings metric with Colandrea coming in at a 14.3 and Muskett at a 14.0. Colandrea does a bit more with this legs and that likely also played a role into the decision. Good news for Virginia is that Muskett is a more-than capable backup if anything happens to Colandrea. It’s unfortunate for Muskett as he is in his final year of eligibility (unless they can find an injury waiver or something else to keep him around and possible transfer out this off-season).
Utah ::: Updated with the official release of depth chart. Not a ton of surprises; but a little reshuffling at wide receiver and in the secondary.
Further: Again, nothing too surprising here. The only notes we really could draw from it is:
WR: Munir McClain not showing on depth chart. Daidren Zipperer and Luca Caldarella bumped.
TE Dallen Bentley listed as a starter alongside Brant Kuithe. He appears to have beaten out UCLA transfer Carsen Ryan. Bentley is more of a blocking-style tight end and Ryan will see the field, likely spelling Kuithe in more of a receiving role. The depth of this room is unmatched.
Georgia Tech ::: Updated full team depth chart with results from their stunning week zero win in Dublin over Florida State.
Further: Here are our quick takeaways and updates to the depth chart for the Yellow Jackets:
QB: Haynes King did more that expected with his legs in this one; boosted his carry share to closer to 25-30%.
RB: They only played two running backs and the backup was not Trey Cooley as expected, it was Chad Alexander (7 carries); Starter Jamal Haynes did his thing on 11 carries, racking up 75 yards and two scores.
WR: Eric Singleton Jr. and Malik Rutherford are the clear 1-2. They will go back-and-forth with who leads each week. Chase Lane was the other only WR targeted in the game.
DB: Safety Taye Seymore moved into the rotation playing 21 snaps at FS. He did not perform well.
DL: DT Horace Locket DNP; moved out of the rotation.
SMU ::: Updated full team depth chart with results from their comeback victory in Reno against Nevada. It wasn't pretty. But it was a win.
Further: Here is what we found at first glance at the results and updates made to the depth chart:
DB: CB Brandon Crossley was ejected for spitting on an opponent. He’ll have to sit the first half of their next game…
DB: Isaiah Nwokobia was a surprise full-time player in this one and he performed very well according to PFF grading.
TE: RJ Maryland stepped up in a big way and was the leading receiver in this one. We boosted him a bit more in target share to 17-20%. He’s emerging as a true star at the position.
Florida State ::: Updated full team depth chart with results from their week zero loss to Georgia Tech.
Further: Here are the immediate changes made to the Seminoles depth chart:
WR: Deuce Spann did not play any snaps; moved Kentron Poitier ahead into the WR5 spot.
OL: Richie Leonard started at LG as expected, but moved over to play some RG, spelling Keiondre Jones while TJ Ferguson filled in at LG.
WR: Moved Hykeem Williams, who missed the game with an injury, to “Questionable” for next week against Boston College.
